Library Journal Review
A social worker and mother of three who has moved her family five times in seven years, Burgan presents a no-nonsense, compassionate guide to helping children deal with the stress, trauma, and potential excitement of relocating. Her 25 practical tips, drawn from her and others' personal experience, are each allotted a chapter and fully explored with many examples. While some of the suggestions are fairly basic (e.g., "keep in touch with old friends"), others are novel and inspirational (e.g., "use storytelling to celebrate your family history"). Boxed inserts supply tangible and often easy-to-execute ideas, and quotes from children and parents add dimension. Cynthia MacGregor's Why Do We Have To Move?: Helping Your Child Adjust is dated and a read-aloud for young children, and there are no other comparable titles in print. Easy to read and eminently useful, this is the ideal parents' helper when faced with a move across town or across the world. Essential for public libraries.
