The main parts of this book are five lectures, followed by four question and answer periods, given by Tenzin Gyatso, the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, in London in 1984. They were published in 1992 as The Meaning of Life from a Buddhist Perspective, and they remain the core of this revised edition. For the most part, the lectures are a clear exposition of basic Buddhist teaching, though references to the Tantras assume some prior acquaintance. The Dalai Lama's responses to questions convey a sense of his personal warmth and compassion. Libraries with an interest in Buddhism or Asian religions should own one of these editions. The revision has some features not found in the original: an expanded introduction by translator Jeffrey Hopkins (Univ. of Virginia) and some minor changes in the translation, two additions to the notes, which have been moved to the back of the book, a better index, and a completely redesigned format. Both editions contain a glossary and a bibliography. The revisi on is an improvement on the first edition, but the differences are not so great as to require libraries having the 1992 version to purchase the newer one. All readership levels. H.
