This is the third edition of what is considered by many to be the standard reference work in the field of clinical chemistry. The previous edition was published in 1994. This edition is intended to be the most authoritative and current source of information pertaining to clinical chemistry. Since clinical chemistry is a discipline that is continually changing, timely revisions of major reference works are both necessary and valuable. This book is intended to serve as a comprehensive reference for students, residents, and practitioners alike. It is a bit too detailed for day-to-day use in the clinical chemistry portion of a medical technology curriculum. However, it is a "must-have" reference for clinical chemists and clinical pathologists and it should be available in the workplace for use by medical technologists and clinical pathology residents. It will also be a useful reference for laboratory-oriented practitioners in many medical specialties. The 50 chapters are divided into six sections. Compared to the previous edition, this edition contains seven new chapters that cover important emerging areas practice including laboratory management, organ transplantation, cytokines, and bone metabolism. Chapters that appeared in the second edition have been extensively revised to incorporate new material. The new edition contains 3000 more literature citations than the previous edition with most of the new references published between 1995 and 1997. The last chapter of the book is a compendium of useful information that includes conversion factors, constants, compositions of buffer solutions, nomograms, and reference values. As was the case for previous editions, this third edition is distinguished from most other clinical chemistry books in that it strikes just the right balance between the theoretical and clinical aspects of a topic and the technical and practical aspects of analytical approaches and test methodologies. The editors are recognized as leaders in the field, and the contributors to the various chapters are authorities both in their areas of practice and in clinical chemistry education and training.
