Carrie Watts, an elderly woman who lives with her son and his nagging wife in a small city apartment, has an overpowering desire to return to her childhood home before she dies. When the opportunity comes, she makes the trip to Bountiful, Texas on her own against the wishes of her family and against difficult odds.
