Prepared by longtime fulminators of citizen activism, this big, handsome paperback advises how to get the grassroots stirring. The authors say the activism they suggest should be on behalf of a recruitable majority and should have three animating principles: to "win real . . . improvements in people's lives," to "give people a sense of their own power," and to "alter the relations of power." The first of the three major divisions of their text addresses choosing a winnable issue, developing strategy and tactics, and giving structure to an activist organization. The large second part discusses specific organizational skills (e.g., developing leadership, using the media, and working with other action organizations such as churches and unions); the third part covers the means of and tools for supporting an organization (e.g., fund-raising, administrative systems, computerization). The guide is personably, literately written and contains a generous final section of annotated resources, including the words to what might be called the activist hit parade ("Solidarity Forever," "We Shall Not Be Moved," etc.). Manuals don't come much better than this. ~--Ray Olson

This is a compendium of powerful tools and information for grass-roots citizens' groups from leaders at the Midwest Academy, which has been training people in direct action organizing for social change since 1973. Efficiently and lucidly organized, the book should be an invaluable manual for individuals seeking to achieve justice and control over their lives through effective social and political group cooperation. There are excellent sections on outside resources, and the words for almost two dozen theme-related songs provide almost a touch of levity in this cogent, comprehensive work.
