Summary
The New Catholic Encyclopedia Supplement 2012-13: Ethics And Philosophy expands upon and complements the scholarship in the 2003, 2nd edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia. It features approximately 740 (540 new and 200 updated/revised) signed, peer-reviewed articles dedicated to philosophical themes, with a focus on philosophy in the Western tradition. The 4-volume publication (also available online in GVRL) covers a wide range of topics including ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, logic, aesthetics, philosophy of literature, art, and music, political philosophy, and philosophy of law. It contains numerous articles of special interest to Catholic thought and culture covering such areas as the philosophical aspects of love, hope, wisdom, marriage, friendship, death, pain and suffering, the human person and the human soul, and the philosophy of God and religion.

Edited by Fastiggi (Sacred Heart Major Seminary), this 2012-13 supplement is another fine addition to the New Catholic family (Supplement 2009, CH, Aug'10, 47-6597; 2nd ed., New Catholic Encyclopedia, CH, Mar'03, 40-3750, and 1st ed., CH, Jun'67). As its title indicates, the theme of this four-volume set is "philosophy, with a special concentration on ethics." The topics covered are both foundational (e.g., "Stoicism," "Truth") and reflective of more recent ideas (e.g., "Game Theory," "Just Wage"). Each of the 740 entries explores the history and development of a topic within the framework of Catholic life, teaching, and doctrine. Analysis of subjects is firmly within current Catholic teaching. The entries are entirely new in 2013 or reworked from the 1967 and 2003 editions. The bibliographies at the end of each entry reflect both current and standard scholarship. No table of contents is included, but the first volume lists articles with their authors and affiliations. A separate contributor list is arranged by author, and an index is provided in volume 4. This will be a very useful addition to undergraduate and graduate reference collections. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through researchers/faculty. E. B.
