Effective communication is essential for success in personal, social, and business relationships. Human communication has many shortcomings to overcome, and Mortensen (Univ. of Wisconsin--Madison) analyzes human interaction from this angle. He examines the basic dynamics that come into play when face-to-face interactions fall short of their intended mark or make no sense at all. The author contends that routine acts of miscommunication tend to weaken the ability and willingness to maintain close relationships. Mortensen has drawn together relevant findings from communication, sociology, and psychology. He illustrates his theoretical framework with personal accounts of students. His analysis is detailed and thorough. For example, the chapter on implication includes six major components; one component, assumption, has three subdivisions, one of which includes self-disclosure, reciprocity, and power. After a thorough and detailed examination of the causes and consequences of miscommunication, the author explores possibilities for improvement in the situations encountered daily.
