Summary
Summary
The pressure to be thin, to have the perfect body, to push oneself beyond the limits is perhaps most strongly felt by female athletes. Their desire to achieve is combined with real and perceived signals from coaches, parents and peers that their success - even their acceptance and participation - in sports hinges on meeting unrealistic standards for body shape, weight, training regimens and performance. The result is often a series of three serious health concerns that make up the female athlete triad.

Choice Review
Women working in athletic training often see examples of the "female athlete triad" detailed effectively here by Otis (physician, UCLA) and Goldingay. The female athlete triad is a set of three serious health concerns--eating disorders, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis--any of which may appear separately in active women but which too often appear together and threaten performance and health. Otis and Goldingay provide an authoritative text that makes a fine addition to any bookshelf. It will be most useful as a self-help aid for female athletes, as a practical guide and reference for the parents and coaches of female athletes, and for educators and health care professionals who may have to deal with or treat amenorrhea, osteoporosis, and various types of eating disorders. "Reader friendly" and unintimidating, this book will be popular with those who do not have a strong medical background or experience with its subject matter, but who encounter it in their work or personal lives.
