Doody's Book Review
This third edition is a historical account of professional nursing considering the significant and evolving role of nursing and related healthcare in American life. From ancient civilization's worship of Greek gods to changing realities of healthcare economics, the orderly methodology is presented for the avid student of historical documentation. The purpose is to present a historical documentation of the development and practice of professional nursing as known today. This is a needed text. The broad objective is met. According to the author, the book is intended for anyone who appreciates historical research and documentation. I think it is intended for undergraduate and graduate nursing students as well as sociology and lay and professional history students. The authors are known as distinguished scholars of nursing history. The illustrations are well chosen and correctly detail the presented historical theme or issue; there are multiple listings of current and appropriate refe rences; the table of contents is well titled and has an orderly flow. Missing is the male nurse in center photo shots on book cover. The book is easy to read and a comfortable size to hold. It is a unique and significant contribution, with an excellent bibliography. The full page picture of the ^^dual-role^^ dressed female nurse is striking as an initial visual. This book is current and comprehensive. It documents the development of professional nursing with clarity, relevance, and scholarly simplicity that is valid. Its use is for both undergraduate and graduate nursing students to acquire appreciation of professional nursing. The authors stimulate the reader to research related subjects such as sociology of healthcare reform. The reader gains sense of value and worth of professional nursing. The authors are focused, and objective and purpose are met. I recommend the book for library, bookstore, and individual purchase. This third edition justifies replacing the previous edit ion.
