Summary
Summary
A number of theories have been developed to explain gender inequality but they have focused either on the micro-level of individual interaction or on the macro-level looking at societal and institutional factors. In this bold and ambitious book Chafetz attempts to integrate these various theories into an holistic one which accounts for stability and change in inequality of gender systems at all levels of analysis.

Chafetz offers "state of the art" theorizing on stability and change in systems of gender inequality. She selectively weaves together strands of preexisting theory (including her own earlier work) to develop a comprehensive, testable perspective on gender stratification. The theory that emerges is unique in that it spans all levels of analysis from the microsociological to the macrosociological. The division of labor between the sexes is put forth as a pivotal variable in the theoretical model. Changes in the gender-based division of labor that foster women's increased involvement in resource-generating work are predicted to result in improvements in the overall level of gender equity. Many phenomena contribute to this gendered division of labor and Chafetz systematically probes them all. Frequent diagrams of the linkages among the many clusters of variables in the model further explicate her theory. The final chapters explore intentional and unintentional change in the key predictors of gender equality, and present alternative scenarios for the future. This book is a major contribution and is recommended for all academic libraries. D. Dunn University of Texas at Arlington
