Howell reports on an exhaustive study by the American Anthropological Association of the health and safety problems faced by anthropologists in pursuit of their careers, both as field workers in distant lands and in the US, as result of what has happened to them in the field. The book covers the full range of medical problems anthropologists have suffered (malaria is one of the most widespread), the dangers from other people or from transportation (flying and driving, even mountain climbing), and the personal adjustments they have had to make in their dedication to finding out how other types of people and cultures live. Although it is a study aimed at the profession of anthropology, it is directly relevant to other disciplines that stress fieldwork in foreign lands.
