Doody's Book Review
This is an update of common and complex medications used by nurses at the bedside for safe and ready to use drug administration. The purpose is to provide current and comprehensive information with a nursing focus for safe drug administration. Safety is a must when working with medication administration and this new edition is more comprehensive and easy to use. The book is intended for practicing nurses, but is also helpful for student nurses. Nursing implications include assessments, potential nursing diagnosis, implementation, patient/family teaching, and evaluation. The authors are credible authorities: Judith Deglin is a PharmD at the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy and April Vallerand is an RN with a PhD at Wayne State University College of Nursing. The book begins with a helpful how-to guide for nurses to better understand and use the book for medication administration. An important focus is on the avoidance of medication errors and maintaining safe nursing practice at all times. Specific classifications of drugs are summarized and the nursing process is emphasized. Colorful tables allow for easy comparison of pills at bedside with patients when drug names are unavailable. The majority of the book covers drug information, pharmacological properties, and special nursing interventions with highlighted bold print used for the safe preparation and administration of medications. Appendixes, indexes, and a bibliography end the book with additional helpful information for practicing nurses. This 9th edition exemplifies a compact, ready to use, and helpful drug information guide for safe nursing practice in medication administration. This edition is more complete and ready to use at the bedside for nurses. Susan A Fosbrook, BSN, MS in Nursing(Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing). Copyright 2001, Doody Publishing
