Gr 4-7-An introduction to these diaphanous, rainbow-hued animals that contains a wealth of information and brilliant photographs. (Aug. 1993) (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
Booklist-Rezension
Gr. 5-8. Paging through this latest New England Aquarium Book, the reader is greeted on almost every page by magnificent color photographs--a trademark of the series. Gowell's in-depth study of jellies, some of the simplest animals alive, offers fascinating information. She notes that in addition to the many varieties that thrive at all levels of the ocean, some, such as hydra, live in fresh water, and she provides facts on specific animals, such as the Portuguese man-of-war and velellas, as well as background on jellies in general. Their stunningly beautiful bodies, unusual life cycles, varied means of movement, and ability to sting (often dangerously) make these animals engrossing subjects of study. In addition to the photos (all captioned), well-labeled color diagrams expand the text. Although the prose is challenging for general readers, student researchers and zoology buffs will be enthusiastic about the range of details. Younger readers will have a tough time reading this, but they will love the photos and absorb many things just in browsing. Glossary and bibliography appended.
