Gr 4-7-- Bolivia retains its Indian characteristics within an uneasy overlay of Spanish influence. Sometimes thought of as a politically turbulent society of coups and cocaine, it nonetheless continues toward democratic stability and economic development. Clearly written and including interesting details about the Spanish conquest and subsequent Indian endurance, this survey of the country's history, geography, and culture is interesting and will be useful for reports. Black-and-white photographs illustrate almost every page, with a full-color center section. The glossary defines Spanish and Indian terms, and the index refers readers to terms in the text which are not in the glossary. --Frances E.
